About the Position

The Worship Pastor will be the producer of all worship services and special programs at First Odessa. Although the Senior Pastor is the director in terms of setting the theme and overall vision of the church, the Worship Pastor will oversee and coordinate all complimentary details of the worship experience. The Worship Pastor must be a visionary who is passionately creative in leading people to experience God in celebrative worship. He must be a leader who can communicate a direction in ministry that inspires those around him to join in the pursuit of that vision. This position requires the man of God to serve, not solely as a musical or performing arts director, but also as a shepherd to the people who serve in the worship ministry.

Job Responsibilities & Duties

To provide pastoral leadership to the worship ministries of First Odessa as an integral part of the church’s mission to reach Odessa, the Permian Basin, and the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • Serve as lead worshiper in all worship services.
  • Build and oversee the necessary teams to carry out worship areas as related to praise teams, ensembles, instrumentalists, children’s choir, student choir, adult choir, orchestra, and dramatists as seasonally appropriate.
  • Plan corporate worship services in consultation with the Senior Pastor and with prayer, conceptual forethought, theological accuracy, and musical appropriateness.
  • Ensure all musical and technical aspects of the service advance the theme for the day/current series while overseeing song selection, media preparation, and presentation for live services and weekly television broadcasts, sound and lighting enhancements, and coordination of vocalists and instrumentalists.
  • Direct and/or oversee weekly activities and rehearsals necessary to facilitate worship.
  • Plan seasonal and/or outreach presentations one to two times per year, seeking to utilize the worship arts ministries to reach the community evangelistically.
  • Oversee the worship department budget, organization, and volunteers.
  • Build contacts and relationships with local musicians, high school/college/university musicians, and music studios for both evangelistic and staffing purposes.
  • Set annual goals for the worship ministry that are in line with the vision of the church, and then evaluate how those goals were attained or modified during the year.
  • Provide pastoral care for the worship teams.
  • Other responsibilities as agreed upon under the direction of the Senior Pastor.

  • A pastor as well as a musician who possesses a heart for the spiritual formation of those in the congregation and worship ministry.
  • Engaging relational skills and an enthusiastic presence for leading worship.
  • Skilled in choral, vocal, and instrumental direction.
  • Skilled in organization, administration, and interpersonal relationships.
  • Skilled in the use of technology in worship.
  • An evangelistic zeal that desires to see and participate in lost people being saved.

General Requirements

  • A clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ coupled with a clear and undeniable call to vocational ministry service in worship leadership for the glory of God.
  • An authentic and growing walk with Jesus Christ through the ongoing spiritual disciplines of Bible reading, prayer, personal worship, and fellowship.
  • A clear and personal conviction to moral purity.
  • A demonstrated track record of leadership and excellence in music and worship ministry with a college degree, seminary or graduate study preferred.
  • A strong and relentless desire for excellence in all things worship and ministry related.
  • A self-starter and team player who maintains a positive attitude.
  • A clear commitment to the evangelistic mission and vision of First Odessa.
