About the Position

The Minister to College Students is primarily responsible for reaching out to students [both Christian and non-Christian] at Northeastern State University, and providing a welcoming and spiritually enriching community at FBC.  The minister to university students should also continue to support and encourage FBC students attending other colleges and universities.

Job Responsibilities & Duties

  • Develop and execute a plan that includes building relationships with students, offering spiritual guidance, discipling students, reaching out to non-believing students, and facilitating opportunities for students to serve others as well as grow in leadership.
  • Provide biblically based teaching that is spiritually beneficial and relevant to university students
  • Intentionally build relationships with university students for the purpose of outreach and spiritual growth
  • Provide pastoral care and counseling to university students
  • Plan, lead, and execute university students events and mission trips
  • Recruit, train, equip, and encourage volunteers to serve in various areas of the university student ministry
  • Encourage and help facilitate interaction of university students with the FBC congregation, increasing the intergenerational connection
  • Work closely with the NSU BCM and other appropriate campus organizations
  • Available to be relationally connected to and reaching university students during evenings and weekends
  • Communicate regularly God’s work in the university student ministry to the FBC congregation
  • Develop and maintain competence in current trends, needs, and strategies related to university students
  • Manage appropriate university student ministry related budget lines
  • Perform duties of a minister and serve as a member of the ministry staff team – help in planning and execution of church-wide initiatives and special events

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ
  • Meet the biblical standards set forth in 1 Timothy 3:2-7, Titus 2:3-5, 1 Peter 5:2-3
  • Displays strong moral character; integrity above reproach
  • No specified formal education is dictated, however a degree from an accredited college and/or seminary is preferred.
  • Passion for young adults [18-25] and a calling to see them experience life-change; evangelistic heart for people far from God and active in sharing the gospel with them
  • Able to teach/communicate biblical truths; fully aligns with the core beliefs of FBC Tahlequah
  • Possess the proven ability to build relationships and trust with people of all ages
  • Activator – proactive in seeing what needs to happen, the opportunities available, and bent towards leading progress in the ministry without supervisor direction
  • Disciple Maker – sees themselves as owning personally Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples”
  • Leader of Leaders – able to identify, develop, and deploy leaders who become partners in ministry
  • Humble team player – part of the staff team and committed to work together with others to achieve the objectives and goals of FBC Tahlequah

About the Tahlequah, OK Community

Tahlequah is located in Eastern Oklahoma and is the capital of the Cherokee Nation with a significant Native American population. Tahlequah is the home of Northeastern State University, the NSU college of optometry, and Oklahoma State University Medical School at the Cherokee Nation. Tahlequah was named by our Lieutenant Governor 3 years ago as the city outside of OKC and Tulsa to grow most significantly in Oklahoma over the next decade. Tahlequah has lots of outdoor activities including hiking trails, the Illinois River, and Lake Tenkiller. The average age of people in Tahlequah is 29. Tahlequah is ethnically, economically, and politically diverse. The main employers in Tahlequah are the health care industry, education, and the Cherokee Nation. Two-thirds of our population are not affiliated with any church and are most likely spiritually lost. Our mission is to reduce the amount of lostness in Tahlequah.
